Arguably, the best
polisher ever made!
If you're old enough to have a little gray in your hair, you may recognize this as the old Black & Decker Model 6138, one of the finest polishers ever made. When Black & Decker put their premium grade products under the DeWalt name, the 6138 became the DeWalt DW849.
Opinions on circular polishers are divided. Younger users feel the DeWalt is an "older generation" design that has been surpassed by higher tech units like the Makita 9227. These young detailers tout the Makita's more powerful, 10 amp motor, the center, front grip and the reduced weight which reduces fatigue.
On the other hand, seasoned professionals (the old timers) swear the DW849 is simply the finest polisher ever built. "Bullet-proof," "Indestructible" and "Runs forever" are often heard descriptions when talking to DW849 owners.
The specs tend to support these opinions. The DW849 has an 8 amp motor vs. the Makita's 10 amp unit but it weighs nearly two pounds more. Much of this extra weight is attributable to the DeWalt's all ball-bearing motor assembly and heat-tempered, precision-cut gears. This gives the DeWalt a feel of solid, controlled power
One of the unique features of the DW849 is the detent speed control. This wheel is mounted on top of the handle where it is easily thumb actuated. This wheel allows you to set the maximum speed of the polisher. There are 16 detent speed settings between 1,000 and 3,000 rpm. Once the speed wheel has been set, the variable speed trigger will adjust the speed from 0 to the set limit. For example, the first speed detent is 1,000 rpm. The trigger will then adjust from 0 to 1,000 rpm. I always start compounding and polishing in this setting. This usually gets the job done. Rarely have I gone to the second or third speed settings (1,100 and 1,200 rpm).
I know this puts me in the "chicken" category but I have never, ever, damaged the paint operating within this speed setting. If you always wanted a truly professional, circular polisher but were afraid of damaging your car's finish, this is the machine for you. Keep the machine in the lower two settings and it's as idiot-proof a polisher as you can get.
Other features include a forward, side grip which can screwed on either side, a spindle lock for easy pad changing and external brush caps for easy servicing.
We give the DW849 a 30 day, no risk satisfaction guarantee* and DeWalt gives a one year parts and labor warranty. This warranty is honored by any Black & Decker or DeWalt Service Center nationwide. For a warranty center near you, call 1-800-DEWALT.
* 30 Day, No Risk, Satisfaction Guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with the performance of this polisher return it to us (Classic Motoring Accessories) within 30 days of purchase for a full refund of the purchase price (shipping not included). Tools must me returned with all parts, box and operating manual, transportation prepaid.
Note: the DW849 does not come with a Hook and Loop Backing Plate or any foam polishing pads. Our 7 inch, Hook and Loop Backing Plate, VBP-7C, listed below, allows you to use any of our 8-1/2 inch foam pads. If you prefer working with smaller 6-1/2 or 7-1/2 inch pads, select the 6 inch Hook and Loop Backing Plate #VBP-6C.
Bottom line, this is one of the benchmark polishers in the industry, idiot-proof when used in the lower speed settings, comes with a 30 day, money back guarantee, a one year parts and labor warranty and a very special, introductory price.
