Description:

LCD projectors that are 5 years old or older are now available and affordable in the used market, such as Craig's List. I am posting this as a general outline for those of you that may be thinking of buying one of these for art transfer.

I recently purchased a VERY old LCD projector that had been built in 1997 for $25. I figured I would try to use it like my Opaque projector and maybe try out big screen theater TV. This unit had a fixed lens with no zoom and the size of the picture at its minimum focus distance was way to big for things I paint. Because of the age there were no digital resizing options within the projectors adjustment. After a couple of months I found a newer model Epson ELP 7000 http://www.aboutprojectors.com/Epson...projector.html
I paid $80 for this unit (Craig's List). As it turned out the zoom and resizing capability lend itself to using this for art transfer. The first use was on some cabinet doors 30x35, larger than what I would normally paint they would not have fit under my Designmaster. I used a makeshift stand to hold the projector while projecting the image. I was able to work in a lighted room and still see the image!!! The bad thing about the image is that with LCD projectors you get what is know as a "Screen Door" effect. You see little squares in the image when you are tracing. This can make fine detail hard to see and is one of the biggest draw backs with this type of projector (DLP does not do this but they cost a bit more than $80).
Over all this is a real nice thing to own for the money. You can use it to in a home theater setup if you don't already have a big screen TV as well as art work.
Before you buy:
First and formost, do a google on the make and model number before buying it to find the specs and replacement bulb cost as well as reviews.
www.projectorcentral.com is a very good research site for this purpose.
Things to look for when purchasing a used unit:
1. Low hours on the bulb (these cost $200-$400 to replace) Most have a setting in the projector menu that tells you how many hours the buble has been used. If the used projector has a blown bulb than pass on it, the bulb cost is more than the unit with working bulb is worth.
2. Make sure it has a long throw if you want to project small images. This means the projector needs to be Far from the sceen to make a big picuture, so when up close the image will be samller.
3. Look for optical zoom capability this lets you make the image larger without moving the projector.
4. Look for the ability to change the image size within the projectors menu. You can and should download the users guide before you purchase to get an idea of what it can and can not do.
5. Make sure your laptop has a monitor out port
6. Don't pay to much! These older units are like cell phones.. they werer VERY expensive when they frist cam out but now you can get a dozzen new ones for the price of one back in the day. People tend to want a lot more than they are worth because they put out thousands of dollars 4 or 5 years ago.. that does not mean they are worth the money they are asking. I have seen LCD projectors over 5 years old being offered for $600, but you can buy a NEW DLP projector on sale for $399 that will blow that 5 year old LCD off the shelf.
I hope this was helpful to someone, good luck and remember, you can always watch the game or the race on the wall even if you don't use it for artwork
