CHANGING COLORS

by Don Johnson

Seems like pretty basic stuff,” changing colors” while airbrushing for those of us who have been airbrushing for a while but to those brand new to airbrushing  it’s one of those techniques that should be covered.  So I’ve put together this short how to article to cover “changing colors” for those brand new to airbrushing.

The techniques below apply to both water based, water born and solvent based paints the only dif would be using the appropriate cleaning solution for the type of paint you are using.

gravity feed airbrush

With a gravity feed airbrush you spray the rest of your color thru the airbrush and add cleaning solution to the color cup. Clean the color cup out with a paper towel soaked in cleaning solution and you should be ready for the next color.

You will learn hopefully to always add just a tiny bit of color to your color cup and not fill it to the brim just because it can hold X amount of color. It saves on the amount of paint you use and makes for less of a hassle when changing colors if you add just enough paint to get the job done to the color cup.

The other fact to consider here is if your color cup is full of lets say red your tendency will be to use all that red even though it’s not necessary. In airbrushing just about any surface the rule of thumb is “less is more” meaning the less paint you use the better the out come. You’ll find adding just a few drops of color to your color cup will go a long way thru an airbrush.

bottom feed airbrush

With a siphon feed or bottom feed airbrush you would pull the color bottle off and plug a bottle in containing the appropriate cleaning solution. Spray the cleaning solution thru the airbrush until you get clear cleaning solution.

Cleaning Solution: With water based colors you would use airbrush cleaner sold by Medea, Badger and several other sources. For solvent based colors you would use reducer or Lacquer thinner.

Spray Thru: When I say spray the remaining color thru or the cleaning solution where do you spray it? If you just spray it out into the air of your shop or studio, painting area eventually you will end up cleaning all that fine dust it creates up, no fun and not a very healthy thing to be doing.

The very basic way is to spray cleaning solution or color thru is onto a paper towel; this can become a bit messy so keep reading below for better solutions.

cleaning station

Several companies including Iwata make and market airbrush cleaning stations, the one pictured above is about $20.00 retail and is nice in that it also acts as an airbrush holder.

If you are thinking GREEN in helping keep plastic out of the local land fill and saving some green $$ you can easily make your own cleaning station. I like to use tubs like this one pictured above that Clorox Wipes come in. Please test your cleaning solution whatever that might be to see it is safe to use in this type plastic tub, most water based paint cleaning solutions should be fine.

The top in these type tubs lean themselves nicely to making a airbrush cleaning station as it will restrict any of the spray off from existing the tub.

Take the top off and stuff some shop paper towels into the tub and replace the top.

As pictured above direct your airbrush into your cleaning tub and spray off your color or cleaning solution, as the paper towels become soaked simply replace them.

Below is my short video on changing colors in your bottom feed and gravity feed airbrush covering both water based and solvent based paints.
