DA ON THE CHEAP

Yes that's me "Back Yard Custom Painter" and proud of it. Thousands of some of the best custom paint jobs done on bikes, cars, trucks, boats, helmets etc. each year are done by "Back Yard Custom Painters". For some like myself it's a decision of convenience, I want to be home for my two children when they leave for school in the morning and when they get back at night, for others it might be a finical decision. Not everyone can afford or wants a big CA. type shop, this does not make them any less a professional than those folks who do. We are all brothers in the same game "custom painting", we all put our socks on one foot at a time. For those of you who enjoy working at home, being a "Back Yard Customer Painter" here's a great little tip for you.

So for us "Back Yard" guys and gals here's a pretty cool way to get yourself a cheap DA that works just great for roughing in body filler or stripping old paint off a set of Harley tins.

Orbital sander that you can buy at just about any Home Depot, Lowes even Wally World for about $19.95 is my answer to the more costly DA.

I've used one for years for this type of work with great success as have a lot of other folks I've told about this over the years. Do not confuse this with something like a HUTCHINES, this is just for roughing your body filler in, stripping old paint off sheet metal, where a Hutch is more for fine sanding work, body work.

For roughing in body filler you want to of course have mixed the filler correctly to begin with to avoid any problems with drying time, pin holes etc. To knock it down to the point where it should be hand sanded using a block or Hutch 40 to 60 grit paper seems to work the best on the orbital sander.(mixing, using body filler correctly is a whole article which hopefully we'll get to soon)

Be careful do not take too much body filler off; you just want to get it to the point where finish sanding will not be so hard, time consuming. And of course there is a proper time to start sanding the filler where it is easest to sand. Experiment and see which grit sand paper works best for you at what stage off the body filler drying.

You want to of course keep the orbital sander moving at all times and check it often to see you are not removing too much filler. For removing or stripping the old paint off sheet metal I found 40 or 50 grit paper on the orbital sander to works quite well. Sorry I don't have pictures of this in progress but it does work without the mess of chemically stripping the old paint or cost have having it media blasted.
