practice on metal surface (devil skull)
I have landed myself a nice job were I have to paint skulls over a compleate hood, and go over it with some nice rips. so my first crack at this comes to getting used to painting on a hard metal surface. have been painting on canvas mostly for the time that I have airbrushed. I´m using golden color and are very happy with it, but on metal it looks off to what I´m use to painting on metal compared when I paint on canvas. If i want a line on canvas then I can get it up to light and shape I wants ot in a few strokes, on metal I have to go over and over to get that exact same line, and when it have dryed it´s off again, and I have to return and do it again. so my question when painting on metal whit tob brand paint (hok) du you get the same problem or does that type of paint stays like it´s sprayed od does that change also?
well here is my picture that I have been practiceing on, the pic is only of the very first cote of white

Looks fantastic Kenn.
Can't wait to see what magic you can create with a larger piece of real estate to play with.

Re: practice on metal surface (devil skull)
when you are spraying base coats, they never look " right" until you hit them with clear. i have found the HOK to build stronger color faster than any water borne i have used, simply because it dries so fast. shoot some of your base coat as practice, on a practice piece, then shoot some sg100 intercoat clear over that and see if it is closer to the color you are looking for. also, are you reducing the base coat? maybe you are just not getting enough paint flow, and that is why you are having to go over so many times. What types of HOK are you using. LJ

Re: practice on metal surface (devil skull)
I´m not using hok because thatr type of paint is banned im my country. unless you have a poison licens and you can get that as a private person:-) the reason why I ask is that I´m going to import hok from sweeden any way. I think that if you use the right protection is no hazard to use.

Re: practice on metal surface (devil skull)
Auto paints are nice because of the Ruducers you can use with them. I use HOK and Sherwin Williams auto paints. The speed of the reducers makes it nice for painting graphics on metals because if you use a fast reducer you can rub it after about 20 seconds (depending on how heavy you spray it) and it doesn't streak or leave a print. I would suggest you goto your local auto store and get some auto paint.
If you get your HOK, and are doing graphics that requires many layers get the fast or medium reducer. Also you might want to get some SG-100 intercoat clear. Then you can do an intercoat clear on certain layers to protect aginst any marks if you have to tape out a section. Ther reduction on most of the HOK stuff is 2 parts paint one part reducer (for your reference). You will need to use some respiratory protection though. Get a mask that has a cartridge that filters out Isocyianates (two part clear coats) and Organic Vapors (most paint fumes). I use one made by Aearo Co. you can google that name and get some idea of what you need. Just by all means DON'T think you can paint with HOK and not use a respirator. You WILL get sick.
BTW you are awesome at doing skulls. I been practicing my technique but I'm having difficulty. Got any tips for me?

Re: practice on metal surface (devil skull)
thanks guys for all the help on auto paints, it have been real help full.
skull tips: I always first draw out the skull on a white paper first with a normal pincel this way I get the shadings ánd detalil figured out, b4 I start on the actual pice. when done at the paper I transfer the outline of the skull i rough with at white pincel just by looking at the drawing. If you want to see what I mean then look on my submission in the skull contest, there are progress pic from start to finish. then I start laying down very lightly the first coat of white, I use golde titanium white that I reduce with ab medium 50/50. and very slowly starts build the pic. then I go in withe a trans gray and ad shadows, then on to the white again, redused around 75/25, trans gray again, and then unredused white, and then the last of the shadows. then I clean up using trans black.

Re: practice on metal surface (devil skull)
Hey skullmaster. I don't know what the availabitity is but give PPG paints a look. HOK are great and we use them alot, but PPG can be a bit more forgiving. They have a reactive reducer (DRR) which has a hardner in it so you can paint over a period of time withoutt clearing. With HOK you have to use the SG100 which can be a pain and could also cause a lot of build up in the thickness of the paint. The last job that I did took 7 weeks and I only cleared it once. You can clean the surface with a waterbase cleaner to remove overspray, which I do probably 5 times a day. I guess that for you, availability is the key but check PPG out. It may be your ticket.

Re: practice on metal surface (devil skull)
it is amazing how things work out in the end. i just started using Hok this summer, and it is so much more user friendly than i would have thought. A whole different ballgame over the waterborne stuff. congratulations!!! LJ

Re: practice on metal surface (devil skull)
thanks guys, can´t wait to start to paint with the good stuff, but I´ll still going to use the golden color on my canvas pictures. but for those hard surfaces I´m going with the good stuff. I´ll guess it´s going to be like to start all over again
