Wet behind the ears, looking for critique
Hey my name is Shawn, I just aquired an old Badger gun from a friend a few weeks ago and I can't put it down. I am confident with oils and acrylic but the airbrush is yet another language I am facinated with and want to not just learn to speak (so to speak), but sing beutifully. I will start posting some random work and appreciate any feed back that any one could give. Welcome harsh/ honest, I asked for it. If I don't know it's bad or can be improved, how can I ever improve. Very sorry for the poor picture quality, found this website and wanted to post what I had to hopefully start getting some feedback. First two pics are a foam plane that I've since repainted and the third and forth is a RC helicopter canopy. Since getting the airbrush gun I can't go one day with out painting with it. Thanks Shawn

Re: Wet behind the ears, looking for critique
Is it because I am new to the web site that there is no feedback? or If
something else I don't know about?

Re: Wet behind the ears, looking for critique
Hey ya Shawn...welcome
Pretty nice work ...and you say you just started?......you should go far
Glad to have ya and looking forward to seeing more of your post.
Nah...your being new is not a factor on replys...everyone here is pretty grand about chimming in...sometimes we are pretty busy in our paint world, and since we are from all over the world...some are not up yet to get in here to check out the post...as for me I am usually on by 7am central US time..and always try to reply, or help out everyone I can, if I can....Im no expert, but if it is something I have been thru I sure will post my opinion

Re: Wet behind the ears, looking for critique
shawn,
considering you are fresh to ab your are off to a great start.
However if you want to use stencils that is a great tool, but to master them is to make it appear as if no stencils were used. Look at some videos, all of craig fraser vids are based off of his stencil kits but you can learn what i mean. Or look at some Mike Learn videos and see how he takes a stencil and makes it look original.
The flames... assuming they are flames are way over stenciled it has a cool design on its own but they are not flames in the traditional or realistic mind set. Look at others flame jobs, JBF is a good example here on this site.
I really like your shark head, especially for being new. my only critique on this for you, is again the stenciling... you can tell the mouth was masked out by the hard lines left behind, but over all I say you are well on your way to this creative outlet, keep up the good work.
Most people (like me) start out with learning control of the airbrush by doing dots and daggers, yes it is boring but if you remember karate kid wax on, wax off.... seems meaningless and boring while doing the exercises, but in the long run it teaches you the fundalmentals and control of your brush making you a better ABer down the road. There are some that can pick it up and start doing but not most. it is up to you if you want to put the time in the begining or do it later.
KEEP UP WITH THE GOOD WORK THOUGH...

Re: Wet behind the ears, looking for critique
First off, I love the color of the Shark. In the future I would work on the shading on the teeth to give them more of a 3d effect. First area would be were the Jaw /lip and teeth meet. There should be a shadow under the lip giving the teeth a set back look. Then maybe a little shading in between the teeth so like you seeing the inside of the top of his mouth. That is a start and it would make the teeth stand out a little more, then maybe a shade on the LEFT and Right Side of each tooth to give it the rounded cylinder appearance. Make sure you always spray in light layers and not "overshoot" the shade you are trying to achieve.
With all that said, it goes back to what Gix has mentioned....Practice, Practice and more Practice. Good luck on you're Singing
Oh and Welcome to the Board............................Kwit

Re: Wet behind the ears, looking for critique
Hey, thanks for all the really helpful tips and input, everyone is very cool here and I appreciate that you all took the time to give me some insight, feedback and references. I have been viewing alot of the work on this sight and it's amazing to say the least. I know it will take time, and yes Gixster I need to become friends with my airbrush gun by practicing the basics over and over, I concur with your diagnosis. Thanks again, I am appreciative for and glad to have found this sight. Later, and take it easy. Shawn

Re: Wet behind the ears
Oh yeah, here's some pix of the planes final paint scheme, I changed it because I was having visability issues. Not any more, it's pretty bright. I was trying to make it look like the orange layer was pealing/tearing away. Need lots of work on shading and airbrush control. I feel as though my airbrushing looks very messy. The botom of plane has clear tape on it so I don't muck up the paint upon landing. Take it easy, Shawn.
