Default Guild Guitar W.I.P.

Hi everyone, This guitar was brought to me by a guy who saw the Gibson guitar with the confederate flag that I recently painted. He tells me he paid a big bundle for this guitar. To me it looked like a K-Mart special. Can someone tell me if this is an expensive guitar( I know nothing about guitars except that I like to paint them)? He wants a painting of a firebird rising out of blue fire and the fire tips emanating into musical notes. The reference pic is from the album "Stravinsky: The Firebird Suite". This is where I need some help ( never painted blue fire) I'm using Auto Air...should I use Cobalt blue or Brite blue candy? Also do you build layers like "True Fire" .....is there a "How to " on this subject? So far I have put a layer of clear coat on (as per his instructions) and then I'm going to put a base of black for the fire and bird.I will keep posting as I go. Thanks for looking any help would be much appreciated.Jim

Jim, Guild guitars are very good. Mostly used by country artists. Will retail from 800-3000$. How they compare to other brand is a matter of preference I think. Although they are quite renowned for accoustics. For the fire you might want to check AutoAir or HOK website. They sell blue fire paint kits. You might be able to get the colors from there.

Guild guitars are pretty popular and lsa's right on with the price range. I would try to keep a couple strings on it all the time though.... Otherwise the without the tension from the strings the neck might warp. Just my 2 cents.

Jim, I've never come across Guild guitars, but that's probably because I'm in the UK - so wouldn't know how good they are - and having never really done proper 'real flames' so can't even help on the paint either.........not doing too well so far huh!

Just wanted to wish you well this project and say that looking at your other work I don't think you'll have any problems doing this job at all

One word of advice would be to take your time on the finishing though On guitars the finishing is probably as, if not more important, than the artwork.

Good luck with the guitar.............hope you'll post pictures when she's done?

Just a quick note, you might want to use a white for the base of the flames. The white will make them stand out a little better and you will have to use less blue for coverage.

Thanks for bringing that up Bahamut....I called my buddy (the guitar repair man who gets me these jobs) and he told me not to worry because he is planning on straightening the neck as part of his repair work. But even better, this guitar gets a tail piece that I did not know about. Where I was planning on painting the bird .....the tail piece would of covered it and I would not have even known until I gave it back to him.Long story short..your 2 cents saved my a$$. Thanks, Jim

Thanks for the info Luc...I tried reducing cobalt blue and spraying that and I can work my way up to any intensity I need by layering....looks fairly decent. By the way sorry about the Habs....well not really I'm a Phili fan!! Maybe next year...Thanks again. Jim

Guild makes beautiful guitars. I used to own a Guild Starfire 4. Double cutaway
versian like the one in your photo. That is a nice guitar you are working on.
Can't wait to see the progress. Sad to say these days fender owns Guild.
Fender is great, but Guild was an old company like Gibson. I play bottle neck
and harmonica now. Great project you are on.

Hey everyone, Hard to keep painting with the way the grass is growing and now my part time job started for the summer (taking care of my pool )! I did manage to make some progress on the guitar. In the one photo you can see the tail piece that is screwing everything up as far as placement of the bird.I showed the customer the pics and he told me to "Run With It". So I will.Lot more work to do.You can see the dirt that got in the base coat. Hope this turns out good. Any suggestions are always helpful. Thanks again .Jim Foe

Looks good Jim. It looks like the birds head or right wing is sort of shaped like the string holder. Any chance of incorporating it into the design? I think it would have to be enlarged though.
