Help with preping a gun stock....

A guy stopped by today and insisted I paint the stock for his rifle. So here I am... The advice I'm looking for concerns the prep work for painting the stock. It's one of those plastic composite full rifle stocks. Has anyone here ever painted one? It's kind of rough textured and has a few spots on it that are knurled. I would hate to totally kill the knurled areas. Anyone offer me any advice about this?

Bahamut, I have painted a few of them, all composite, wipe stock down real good with denatured alcohol, and paint it with whatever brand of paint you use ( I used Createx ) then clear coat it with Krylon rattle can clear ( matte finish ) there is a least one of the ones I did in the Gallery under my pics. Looking forward to seeing it when you getr it done.

I'm gonna be using uro's for paint. So I can't use Krylon they aren't compatable. I guess he's gonna be using this gun in the woods so I need it to be durable. Nothing fancy for adhesion? He wants a zebra pattern on it

That will look sweet, I can't wait to see your work. My shotty is patiently waiting in the closet. Zebra would look hot on it. It is already matte black. I will totally have to copy cat. How do you plan on doing the pattern?

Mine is durable, I have been carrying it every year in the woods for the last 3 years without any degredation to the paint. One tip I would give ya is to make sure you clear it with a Matte finish so it doesn't shine in the woods. You ask about prep, I don't use uro's so I am not sure of the prep for them, or if it is any different then water based paints, but what I did for the few that I have done wiping down with Denatured alcohol gave me great adhesion.
